How to fix Excel problem for Mac which stop responding with spinning wheel?

Mac operating system is designed by Apple computers which provides many features for the users and can install other OS applications like Ms Word, Ms Excel and MS Outlook etc.  But sometimes while working in Mac operating system and when you try to open Excel application for Mac Os then application stops responding. This problem creates due to various issues which are generated in your computer.

Why this problem occurs?

This problem occurs due to several reasons such as:-

  • Ms Excel that you have installed in your Mac OS may not be installed properly.
  • Virus present in your system is the main reason for occurring this problem.
  • Previous updates of Mac may not be updates completely.
  • Shut down of system without closing programs.
  • Files which you want to open may be corrupted.

What are the symptoms?

When you try to open Excel for Mac then the application stops responding and you are unable to access or open Excel document.

  1. Check the document name because if the document contains percent, slash and character etc then files doesn't open even you double click the name and show you an error message. It is very much necessary to check the document name that you have created.
  2. You can also empty the Auto Recovery folder and to do this follow the steps:-

  • Close all the programs that you are currently working on.  
  • From the File menu click on New Folder option
  • When you click on New Folder option then new folder will be created on the desktop and this folder will be known as new folder.
  • Now from the Go menu, click on Documents
  • Then open Microsoft User Data and then open Office  Auto Recovery.
  • In the Edit menu, click on Select all option.
  • As the list appears then move all the files into the New folder on the desktop.
  • Then the Auto recovery folder gets empty.
  • Open Excel for Mac OS and try to save a file.
  • If the file get save then review the contents of New folder to decide which files you want to keep.
      3.  Check whether the hard drive doesn't have any character in its name and to do this:-

  • Close all the Mac programs.
  • From the Finder menu, click on Go and then select computer.
  • Your hard drive must be listed and mostly the common name for hard drive is “Macintosh HD.”

      4.  If above name is not listed in your hard drive then rename it and to do this:-

  • Click to select the hard disk and from the Finder menu, click File and then Get Info option.
  • Type Macintosh HD in the Name and Extension dialog box
  • When this renaming process gets completed then click the red circle button on top.

      5.  If this problem has affected badly in your system and doesn't allow you to open Excel applications               then uninstall and download the latest version of MS excel and install and run it in your computer.

You can also use third party repair tool or Mac file recovery tool to fix or overcome from this problem.
